Recognizing Learning Disabilities Awareness Month in Canada

October marks Learning Disabilities Awareness Month across Canada. This a time to recognize the strengths, struggles, and successes of individuals with learning disabilities (LD) and ADHD. It’s also a time to renew our collective commitment to building understanding, breaking down stigma, and ensuring that everyone has access to the supports they need to thrive.

For over 60 years, the Learning Disabilities Association of Canada (LDAC) has worked to support individuals with LD and ADHD, as well as the families, educators, and professionals and volunteers who stand with them. From advancing research and advocacy to providing resources LDAC has been a national voice promoting equitable access to education, employment, and community life.

Yet, despite decades of progress, many myths and misconceptions about learning disabilities persist. Too often, individuals with LD and ADHD continue to face barriers to identification, understanding, and accommodation and these unnecessary challenges can affect their learning, confidence, and opportunities. As we mark this month, we are reminded that awareness must be paired with action: ensuring that every individual receives the support and recognition they deserve.

As part of LD Awareness month this October, we were pleased to host a blog post on #ExecutiveFunction from Dr. Rick Bryck, our partner atĀ Landmark College in Vermont.

Doreen Kronick Scholarship Winner Announced

LDAC is very proud to support the 2025 recipient of the Doreen Kronick Scholarship.

Jesse Geddes will be furthering her education in the Master of Education program at Memorial University. She previously completed a B.A in Sociology and Gender Studies at Dalhousie University and a Graduate Certificate in Mental Health and Disability Management from Mohawk College.

Her previous employment as an Accessibility Advisor and Accommodation Officer at different post secondary schools along with her personal journey as an adult with a learning disability has encouraged her to become an advocate for herself and others.

By continuing her education Jesse will be able to further address the needs in implementation of accommodations at the post secondary level and provide proactive support and collaboration to students and faculty.

The Doreen Kronick Scholarship (DKS) may be awarded to a person who is pursuing a program of graduate study in a university that will assist learning disabled students. Applications are reviewed according to the following criteria: the student’s future educational program leading towards assisting persons with learning disabilities; the submission of a satisfactory academic record; the student’s contribution to his or her community and to campus life.
