The LDAC Board of Directors is made up of 17 members, twelve of which are appointed by each of the ten provincial and two territorial Learning Disabilities Associations, of which four persons are elected to sit on the Executive Committee. In additional four directors-at-large and a board Chair complete the group.
The Board of Directors is largely representative of the provinces and territories in Canada and adults with learning disabilities (consumers). Each position on the board is a two-year term. Board Conference call meetings are held on a quarter basis throughout the year.
CHAIR: LYNN GREEN, NL
Lynn has been Chair of LDAC since 2008, the Director representing Newfoundland and Labrador at the national board for nine years and has been on the LDANL board for ten years. She has been the Chair of LDANL Blind Date with a Star event for eight years and served as the Chair of the 2007 National Conference on Learning Disabilities that was held in St John’s. She was the Co-chair of the LDAC Committee on Educational Accommodations. Lynn has three daughters, one of which has a learning disability, three dogs and a very supportive husband who does all of the cooking. As LDAC Chair, Lynn has been able to secure Seamus O’Regan, CTV’s Canada AM morning co-host as LDAC’s media champion and has initiated an anti-stigma campaign on learning disabilities.
VICE CHAIR: LORRIE GOEGAN, AB
Lorrie is the Director from Alberta and also serves as the Chair of the LDAC BUS Committee (Board Development). She is a past President of LDAA and co-chaired the 2003 National Conference on Learning Disabilities which was held in Calgary. Lorrie was a panel participant at the 2008 World Summit on Learning Disabilities and is on the organizing committee for World Summit 2012. She regularly presents workshops for professionals and parents in the area of special needs. Lorrie and her husband have three children including an adult daughter who has a learning disability.
SECRETARY: MAL MALLOCH, YK
Mal represents the Yukon on the LDAC board and is an active member of the BUS Committee. He is a longtime board member with LDAY and is currently the LDAY President. Mal is a management consultant who volunteers with a number of organizations including the Cycle to Walk Society and the Yukon Volunteer Bureau. His hobbies include exploring Canada and hanging out with his three kids.
TREASURER: MEL PHELAN, ON
Mel Phelan has experience in the not for profit, private and public sectors. She holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree and has a CHRP (Certified Human Resources Professional). Mel has always had an interest in art and in 2006 completed the course requirements for her visual arts certificate at Algonquin College in Ottawa. Mel also loves to garden and hopes to become sufficiently proficient at the game of Bridge to play in a master’s tournament.
SUSAN KENNEDY, ON
Susan is serving her second term as the Director from Ontario. She has been involved with her Mississauga chapter for over 17 years. As a former Vice Chair of the Ontario Custody Review Board and Child and Family Services Review Board, she oversaw the implementation of the Safe Schools hearings process, and experienced firsthand the complexities of challenges facing incarcerated youth, many of whom have struggled academically. Susan and her husband have a son with Asperger's syndrome and two daughters. All three children have learning disabilities.
RAY ALI, MB
Ray is in his second term as the director from Manitoba and is also a long standing board member for LDA Manitoba. Additionally, he is actively involved in a number of organizations and has a particular interest in food security and immigrant issues. Professionally, he is a Marriage and Family Therapist and has written three books on anger management. He has been married for thirty years and has two adult children.
DANIELLE BRULE-LUNDGREN, SK
Danielle is in her second year as Director from Saskatchewan. She has been involved with LDAS for over ten years, first with the Saskatoon Chapter and currently is the president of LDAS. She is married to her very supportive husband and has a beautiful and energetic five year old daughter. Danielle is a Grade 1 French Immersion teacher in the public school system. Besides working and volunteering, Danielle enjoys spending time with friends and family, traveling and is working on becoming an avid gardener.
CINDY GRANT, NB
Cindy is in her second term as the Director from New Brunswick. She is the mother of three beautiful children and lives with her husband and family just outside Saint John, NB. Two of her children have dyslexia and she is a strong advocate for them and others in the area. Cindy is a graduate of the Holland College Business Information Processing Program as well as the College’s Journalism Program. She has spent most of her career working in print media, radio and television and for the past decade has been employed by CBC Radio in Saint John. She has also worked with the Canadian Antiques Roadshow. Cindy is a former board member of the Rothesay Kings Rotary Girls Choir and The New Brunswick Bed and Breakfast Association. She is also a volunteer with Kennebecasis Valley Minor Hockey and Baseball Associations. She gets her joy from her family, her dog Lily and the great outdoors.
EDITH MELANCON, QC
Edith worked in a CLSC for 22 years. Since May 2009, she has been working as a psychologist for the Seigneurie des Mille-Iles school board in Quebec. She performs psychological assessments, and provides clinical support with school staff in classes with children experiencing multiple problems related to learning and mental health issues. She trains teachers working with adults on learning disabilities. She facilitates groups of children with learning disabilities and their parents. Edith is currently secretary of her provincial association (AQETA).
PHILIPPA SLATER, BC
Philippa has represented British Columbia on the LDAC board for several years and serves on the Marketing and Communications Committee. She is currently the Vice Chair of LDABC. During the past fifteen years, Philippa has been a volunteer in the
not-for-profit sector, advocating for enhanced educational programs and
services for students with exceptionalities. She has two grown children with LD.
JOACHIM STROINK, NS
Joachim has recently been appointed as the Director representing Nova Scotia. He is an entrepreneur/business owner and community mobilizer who has served as the LDANS Board Chair since 2007. Using awareness as his objective, Joachim draws on his own experience in having ADHD and dyslexia to further promote the potential that persons with disabilities have, despite the challenges they face. He is a loving husband and father to two beautiful girls.
JOANNE McCABE, PEI
Joanne is presently Coordinator of Accessibility Services in the Webster Centre at UPEI. She has been President and Past President of LDAPEI and continues to volunteer in the community. Joanne has spent most of her career working in education in four Canadian provinces. As an educator, Joanne has worked as classroom teacher, resource teacher, university professor, consultant, coordinator, and district principal. She has two daughters and a wonderful husband. In Nov. 2009, Joanne will be retiring from UPEI and is looking forward to a more flexible lifestyle.
GARY MOONEY, ON
Gary sits on the LDAC board as a Director-at-large. He serves on the boards’ of CADDAC (Centre for ADHD/ADD Advocacy, Canada), the National Orthopedic Association of Canada, Credit Valley Hospital and Osgood Hall Law School. He also serves as a Governor of the University of Toronto, and is a member of the Board of Trustees of Landmark College in Vermont, a post secondary education specializing in the education of young men and women with Learning Disabilities. Gary is the Chairman of FNF Canada. He and his wife have two sons.
DEBBIE OSTER, BC
Debbie was recently appointed Director-at-large and will be the Chair for the Marketing and Communications (MAC) Committee. Debbie is a Vice President of Human Resources at TELUS Corporation. While living in Vancouver, Debbie and her husband Vern are enjoying the challenges of raising two teenage boys.
CHRIS CANAVAN, BC
Chris is in his second term as a Director: Adult Issues. He is a Vice President of BMO Nesbitt Burns Financial Services where he is an estate and insurance specialist. Through his work he has had the opportunity to travel across much of the country. Chris lives in Vancouver and has a 12 year old daughter, Meghan, who is dyslexic. He enjoys the outdoors and makes regular trips to Whistler to ski in the winter and mountain bike during the summer.

Director of Public Policy and Programs - Claudette Larocque

Claudette is responsible for the management of LDAC projects, coordinating day-to-day activities, seeking project opportunities, project delivery and project reporting. She is a member of several federal advisory committees and consults with Provincial and Territorial LDAs on resources, policy and legislation issues in such areas as tax measures for persons with disabilities and improved accessibility for persons with print disabilities in public libraries.
Claudette manages the call centre and responds to questions from parents, adult consumers, professionals, educators, employers and students on current issues relating to learning disabilities.
Robert Moulson, Director of Finance, LDAC
Robert looks after the day to day financial operations of LDAC. This includes, but is not limited to: ensuring that all aspects of LDAC’s financial management conform to recognized accounting principles for non-profit organizations in Canada. Rob is also responsible for developing financial policies and procedures, amended charts of accounts and developing systems for the tracking of projects, grants and donations.
Contractual staff are hired on an as need basis.
